Bringing In The Loonies

Hi everyone! I'm back, finals are over, and I have lots of pictures and stories to share. I'll be doing it in several picspams.

The first picspam is short. It covers a Very Special Visit to the University of Chicago campus. As with all my picspams, you can enlarge the pictures by clicking on them.

As I mentioned earlier, the Westboro Baptist Church elected to pay a visit to the University of Chicago in order to advise us of our lowly status vis-a-vis the Almighty for the unpardonable sin of . . . well, of once having employed an African-American gentleman who, many years later, went on to become President of the United States.

Frankly, I think that even the WBC themselves thought this was a pretty flimsy pretext for a protest. As you can see here, they're really just phoning it in:

The counterprotest that the students set up was pretty small -- the school had asked people to keep it down, so as not to give the WBC what they wanted, which was an opportunity to create conflict and therefore opportunities for the lawsuits that they use to fund their church (most of them are lawyers). Still, there were about six times as many counterprotestors as WBC members.

The rest of us just went to hang out at the Reynolds Club (the student union), where various campus groups had set up a selection of activities designed to promote happiness, including music, free hugs, and s'mores. Guess which Music 102 TA ate a lunch of s'mores just before class . . .

I do have to say this about the WBC; they bring out the creativity in their counterprotestors like whoa. The Cthulhu sign was a treat.

What's that sign one of the WBC is holding? 'Pray for more dead kids'???

I don't know who their God is, but he's not the one I believe in.

Yes. Yes it is. You've read it absolutely right. Their other standard signs include such charming messages as "God Hates America," "God Hates Fags," "Thank God For Dead Soldiers," and the ever-classic "You're Going To Hell." They pull these out when they go to picket the funerals of soldiers.

Their God is not one in whose heaven most people would care to spend eternity, even if we were allowed (the only people who get in are members of the WBC).

Okay, I guess I misunderstood the whole church thing as actually being a church. These people are hate-crime promoters!!! I was reading some of the things they've done and it's appalling. I'm baffled as to how this comes out of alleged christianity.

I think that there is some government agency somewhere that does have the WBC classified as a hate group. But they still get churchly tax breaks. Because they are lawyers.

Yeah, those people look just brilliant there. Glad they are 2000 miles away from me.

Fortunately, they are long gone from Chicago, as well. Probably off to find some poor dead soldier's family to harass.

I don't know how you delude yourself enough to pray for dead kids.

The whole church is essentially this one guy's ginormous family. I suppose you really have to be brought up in the whole mishegos in order to believe it. But they do.

Um, does that first picture show a sign saying "Pray for more dead kids"?

Yay for finals being done!

Boo for WBC. Yay for the counterprotestors. (Though, truthfully, neither group has the overt zeal of sixties protestors.)

Looking forward to Canada tales and pic spam.

Frankly, given the kind of protest and counterprotest this was, I think that it's a good thing all around that that special sixties vibe wasn't there.

There will be a Canada picspam soon, promise. Spring Break turns out to be surprisingly busy.

Great pics. Looking forward to more updates now that you're not in school mode.

I love how the WBC haven't thought to redesign their signs since the 80s. Fluorescent colours are SO in!

They were supposed to come to Britain twice recently but the Home Office has said they won't be allowed in. Am I wrong for kinda wishing they *were* allowed in so I could go rubberneck? :-S

I bet they're still using some of the very same signs from the 80s, too.

Spring Break turns out to be busy, but there will be picspams coming.

Am I wrong for kinda wishing they *were* allowed in so I could go rubberneck?

Naaaah. They're so over-the-top that they're kind of entertaining, really.
