Another Academic Hurdle Jumped

I just got out of my Jewish music research tutorial. No more classes. Ever. I have Finished My Coursework. One practicum exam, one Special Fields exam, and one dissertation proposal are the only things standing between me and candidacy now.

. . .

Some day, I will be Dr. Pony. I'll just keep my eyes on that shining future.

It's liberating and a little scary all at once. Five years now I've been going to classes, and now, bupkis.

Congratulations!! I know that feels great!

Liberating and scary. But I'll be TAing again sometime next year, and that will bring back some structure into my life.

Wow! That's terrific.

Yup. Was getting kind of tired of classes there. I think I shall sleep in tomorrow to celebrate.

You'll miss it when it stops. Like hitting your head with a hammer. Or sticking pins in yourself.

Candidacy sounds ... interesting. Like becoming a nun. Or something.

I'm sure I'll find things to fill up my time. TAing, fieldwork, teaching, that sort of thing. If I really really really miss taking classes, I can always audit a language or two.

Since my main project this summer will be reading for and then writing my dissertation prospectus, I have decided to do it in style. I went out to the CVS today and invested in a really classy lawn chair, one of those that fold up like an umbrella and fold out into a little armchair with a cup holder. I intend to take it out to the Point (a park on the lake shore) with a cooler of iced tea and all my academic books, and do my reading out there in the sunshine.

Oh now that sounds really lovely.

The way I see it, there's no reason not to do that reading in style. Assuming that we ever again warm up to summer temperatures, of course. Besides, I've wanted one of those nice lawn chairs for a while now, and I got one for real cheap with my discount card.

We're having summer at the moment but I'm not sharing.

After I've been so kind as to offer to send Chicago weather your way in the past?

I could always audit another language class if I wanted to, but I am definitely moving into a new phase of being a graduate student.
