The Things I Do For Ethnomusicology

This morning, I had the immense privilege of standing out in the pouring rain at 10:15 this morning (having previously had to explain to a university catering services person that the broad category "tea" also includes the subcategory "black tea," and that, while I am not ordinarily a violent woman, subcategory "black tea" should be produced RIGHT NOW, since it was for a university catered breakfast, thankyouverymuch) watching a faculty procession and the 500th convocation, and having to listen to the university pipe band play "Scotland The Brave" not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES.

Oy vey.

"Scotland The Brave" is a lovely tune, but no one -- not even the pipers -- NO ONE needs to hear it three times in one day.

I'm not very much of a tea drinker, but isn't black tea the default?

You'd think so. But apparently the U of C catering services do not see the world that way.

I'm going to have to go with meggins on this one--if they didn't have black tea, what on earth did they have?

500th Convocation?! But, the US hasn't been around 500 yrs, so your university couldn't possibly be on its 500th convocation.

I'm so confused. ;-)

They had couple of teeny little plates with an assortment of the cheapest brand of herbal teas they could find. Clearly, they need a reeducation.

The U of C holds convocation every quarter, so there are at least three per school year. That's how they get to 500 convocations at a school that's only 117 years old!

Herbal tea? That's all they had? What the hell?

Precisely. And they had a grand total of maybe ten packets distributed between two tables, both of which held giant vats of coffee.

And it wasn't even good herbal tea, either. It was Bigelow brand, which makes absolutely the bitterest, sourest herb teas I have ever tasted.
