Dance, Wee Undergrads!

Today is the Great Dance Experiment. My dance teacher is coming to Music 102 as a special guest, and we are going to teach a class on Scottish Country Dance. Culminating (and this is the Great Dance Experiment part) with the students actually getting up and learning a very simple dance.

Everyone I've talked to in the department is fascinated by this. Apparently, lots of music professors say they want to find a way to incorporate dance into the curriculum, but relatively few of them actually do that. So they're all impressed that I'm trying it out, and they all want to know how it will work.

I want to know that, too . . .

It was fun! The students really got into the dance, much more than I'd expected them to.

Everything went brilliantly. No ankles were twisted, and a good time was had by all.

It went wonderfully. The professor was highly impressed, and I think the students had a good time, too. They were wonderfully willing to go along with things, from being in a different room to helping move chairs to clear a dance floor, to the hard part of actually getting up and taking a partner (U of C students are not exactly known for their social skills). They got into the dancing, and you could tell that they were learning to hear the phrases right then and there as they danced.

Sounds like it went very well. I took Folk & Square Dancing as one of my phys. ed. classes in college, and it may be the only phys. ed. class I ever looked forward to.

Here's hoping your successful experiemnt will inspire other professors.

Well, I do think the students had fun. There's definitely a "culture of theory" here at the U of C, and students in a class like this don't really walk in expecting to be asked to sing and dance. But when they are asked, they deliver, and even though they're shy at first, they really seem to enjoy it.
