Holiday Decoration!

Since several people on my flist have posted pictures of their holiday decorating, I shall now return the favor! These are among the first pictures taken with the new digital camera, which was a gift from a friend when she heard that my old one died.

The living room, no flash, with the menorah in the window, fully lit for the last night of Chanukah, which was tonight.

A couple of close-up shots of the menorah, taken with flash.

That is a beautiful menorah, FP. Where do you get your candles from?

Believe it or not, I actually bought those candles at a yard sale! I have no idea why someone was selling Chanukah candles at a yard sale, but they were pretty, so I bought them. Otherwise, there's a shop called Rosenblum's in Rogers Park, and back when the Co-Op still existed, you could buy candles there, too.

The candles are beautiful. I have some smokeless dripless ones that i picked up in Israel many years ago but I've never seen any quite like them since. I really like those that you had.

If I end up in Israel next year, I'll keep an eye out for the smokeless dripless candles. Are they beeswax? That's supposed to make smokeless candles. I kind of doubt that the dripless bit will work on my menorah, though; the candles are so close together that they start dribbling just from the heat of their neighbors.

Oh, how beautiful! I enlarged the last picture to properly see the detail on the menorah - it's gorgeous. Did you buy it or is it a family one?

I also love the blue candles! Forgive my ignorance - does it have to be a particular type of candle?

It's a family menorah. The Pony Parents gave it to me when I went to college. They now use a wooden one that Mom Pony made. And, yes, I know, wooden device that holds candles = BAD idea. They're pretty careful with it, though. As far as I know, Mom Pony has only had it catch on fire once. I've offered to give this one back or get them a new one, but Mom Pony really likes using one that she made.

The only specification for the candles is that they be the right size to fit. These were just some really pretty ones that I happened to see at a yard sale.

The floors in your apt are lovely. And that menorah is gorgeous!

I love the hardwood. It makes the place look elegant even if I don't have nice rugs. And the combination of hardwood floors and plaster walls means that my apartment has fantastic acoustics for singing.

I do like this menorah, even though it's small enough that maneuvering the shamash candle back into place around nights six through eight gets tricky. But it's the menorah I grew up with, so I know how to deal with the candles, and it's so pretty that it's totally worth it.

You have a beautiful place. The floors are very elegant.

And the menorah is beautiful! I see in the comments it was the one you had through childhood. I bet you love having it now.

The apartment does look very elegant when it's clean and tidy, which is a great motivator to keep it that way!

I do love having the menorah of my childhood. Though I would also like the Pony Parents to have a metal one. But whenever I light this one, I can remember being a little kid and so excited to get to light the menorah again!

A very lovely menorah, but I too am enthralled with the candles. I've only seen white candles in menorahs. I guess because they are easiest to find. These blue ones are just nifty. (Make me want to go attend a yard sale, but the ones around here never have anything like that.)

The really cheap candles that I usually buy are multicolored. Sometimes I arrange them in patterns, and sometimes I just stick random candles in.

I've only once ever seen Chanukah candles at a yard sale, and these were them!
