Hip, Hip, Hurrah!

Health care has passed!

It's not perfect, but as the AMA said, the perfect should not be the enemy of the good. It's far easier to reform an existing bill than to pass an entirely new one. I'm especially pleased at the part that forbids insurers to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. This is a great thing for all of my friends who have pre-existing conditions, and I am heavily grateful for them. (That is, I'm grateful on behalf of my friends, not grateful for their pre-existing conditions.)

A real post about singing, dancing, and being a ninja TA will follow later.

A hard-fought battle, congratulations.

Thank you! Mom Pony and I had a nice squee over it this morning.

I think this is good news. Our NHS is far from perfect, but you can go to a doctor or hospital without fear of what it might cost. Many of my American friends on LJ have commented about the cost of emergency treatment etc.

Emergency treatment, hell. Even non-emergency medical treatment costs Ye Olde Bigge Bucks. At least this way, more people might be able to afford to get sick.

Agreed. It is not perfect, but I personally do believe the function of government is to serve people and in the US we should be able to go to the doctor without mortgaging the house (assuming we have one to mortgage). I hope ultimately this bill, or something that evolves from it, allows that.

And Mom Pony told me yesterday that Social Security was like this when it passed -- hugely controversial, large sections lopped off to get it to pass, the works. But it's always easier to amend existing legislation, and the bits that got cut off Social Security were added back in, and now it's such an entitlement that it's political suicide to even think of maybe one day bringing up the idea of possibly forming a committee to look into the possibility of doing anything to it.

Medicare, too -- Keep your government hands off my Medicare! cry the bozos.

Maybe this health care plan will be like that, too.

It's too soon to say how it's going to affect me personally, but, overall, I do think it's a step forward.

As long as the GOP either quits the terrorism, or ramps it up to such a level that they finally lose every last shred of their credibility, I think it'll be great. My guess is that it won't affect you personally much at all, but that it'll really affect people who need health insurance and have a hard time getting it now.
