To Dot, From The South Side

From the land of the South Side Irish, home of the Daleys and their beloved White Sox,
From the land of the Chicago River dyed . . . well, greener than it usually is,
From the land of dyed green beer bought at exorbitant prices in pubs in Wrigleyville run by Professional Irishpersons (remember those?),
From the land of a green masthead on the Chicago Sun-Times,
From the land where we all wish we could be you for a single, glorious day,
From the land where, thanks to global warming, it really was a gloriously sunny day,

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Glad you had a glorious sunny day. Even if it was because of Global Warming.

Well, it seems that just about anything is Global Warming. Thigh-deep snow? Global Warming. Mild winter with nice warm days in March? Global Warming. Cloudy with a chance of meatballs? Global -- okay, maybe that's not Global Warming. But everything else is, so I might as well enjoy the nice days when they come.

Especially when they come at the beginning of spring break!

Oh - it's Spring Break? Are you staying in town, then?
Mar. 18th, 2012 12:06 am (UTC)
Yeah. I'm going up to Madison next weekend for the Spring Ball. But other than that, I have to rework a dissertation chapter that's going to be submitted as part of a fellowship application. I have to add more gender studies theory to it, which I'm not looking forward to, because theory kind of gives me hives, but whatever. At least it'll be nice and warm while I do it.

And I don't have to go out to UIC for a week. But I think that I'll get myself a commemorative T-shirt or something after break is over.

Oh! This made me smile :-)

And I do remember the Professional Irishpersons! I do!

It's not just the Wrigleyville Professional Irishpersons today. Today, we are all "Chi-rish," as the newspapers like to call it in a desperate bid to move wood pulp.

Hope it was a good holiday for you!

It was nice. Mainly we just like having a random day off.

I met a friend for dinner and then we went to see the Beckett Trilogy. I was telling daw I didn't undersand much but had a good night anyway :-) That might have something to do with the free champagne we get because my friend's company has a corporate box at the Opera House...

Suh-weet! Let me know if they ever need a musicologist. You've got one on retainer, you know.

It's not quite as amazing as it sounds.

But if I hear of anyone looking for someone who sounds like you, I'll let you know!!

"Dot! We need an American ethnomusicologist who speaks Broadcast English with a New England overlay and a few hints of Chicago and the Deep South, stat!"

You never know...

Sounds like a great party!
Mar. 18th, 2012 12:24 am (UTC)
Well, any excuse for a fun time in Chicago in March!
Mar. 18th, 2012 03:45 am (UTC)
Oh, that's right. Thhey dye the river green in Chicago. I'd forgotten.

No such frippery here. Not enough Irish, I suppose, but Kelly's Tavern, Sarah's Pub, and Keagan's do what they can to mark the occasion. And on our Southside, which means a different city entirely but still part of Hampton Roads, they run the Shamrock Marathon.

Have fun(?) revising your chapter and good luck with the application. Have fun (no doubts this time) at the Spring Ball. I always enjoy hearing about your activities.

Well, we are Professional Irishpersons here in Chicago, after all. We've got to Do It Right.

My advisor says that only minor changes need to be made to the chapter, and he specifically stated that this was not meant to cause lots of extra work. Maybe a day or so of poking around the library is all.

:) I'm glad you had a gorgeous day. I must say I'm grateful for the lovely, early spring and mild winter!

Right after I had to replace my winter coat, go figure! Well, I did get a few weeks with the new one, and it'll be right there waiting for me come next winter.
