Good luck, FP. Knock 'em dead.

I'm supposed to have a phone meeting with my advisor sometime tomorrow where we discuss who my recommenders will be and what sort of things to put in a cover letter. There are already two really neat positions that I have my eye on, and one position that would be great fun for someone else, since it involves spending significant time in Malaysia, where I couldn't eat the food.

Oh, so you're on the market this year? Smart. I went the year before I finished my diss. I didn't end up getting anything, but I did way better in my interviews the next year due to that experience and I got an offer from my first choice school. And I wasn't half as prepared as you are--you've done way more than I did in grad school. You are going to blow them away. Good luck!

Yup, I'm officially on the market! At the moment, I'm kind of looking forward to this. Dad Pony has been telling me for a while that I am the competition, and I'm almost inclined to believe him (he is Dad Pony, after all, so you have to take what he says with a grain of salt). There are some good schools coming on the market, so I hope that at least I get some flyouts.

speaking of flyouts, any possibilities that involve el trips?

good luck!

Not yet. But the season's just opened. Who knows what else there will be?

On the other hand, if you're thinking Northwestern, that's never going to happen. They don't actually want a Ph.D ethnomusicologist, and I don't want to work for them.

i just want you to stay in the chicago area because i am selfish that way. northwestern didn't occur to me, though some time you should tell me why they're off your list.

Staying in Chicago would mean a job opening up at one of the universities in the Chicago area. UIC and DePaul would be the most likely candidates, so focus your mental energies on them.

Sometime I will tell you about Northwestern. But not now. It's kind of complicated.

I would say that you don't need luck because you have talent, but I know how these things go sometimes. So, Goo Luck!

Thank you! The luck that I'll need will be mostly in the idea of there being enough good-caliber jobs suited to what I can do (i.e. not jobs like the one that requires people to go to Malaysia), so that there's a realistic place for me to go.

I'm sure you'll be snapped up!
Jul. 23rd, 2012 12:31 pm (UTC)
To the extent that the long, drawn-out process of academic job selection counts as "snapping" up . . . I hope so!
Jul. 23rd, 2012 08:03 am (UTC)
I have no idea how these things work but... Good Luck!!!

I've been watching my friends go through this for a while now, and it's a long process. There are several rounds of application, and you have to send in increasingly more detailed application items with each round you reach. The final round (should you be so lucky) is a flyout, when the school brings you in to visit for a few days, and you give a talk and possibly teach a sample class. Then they'll hire someone . . .

Congratulations and good luck! I appreciate the explanation of the process, it is very different than my background. I hope you *are* the competition and the schools fight over you!

I'm busy getting all my materials together! I'm going to be the best competition I can possibly be. It's going to be exciting to see where I finally end up. I was on the phone with my advisor yesterday, and he told me about some very interesting places that he thinks are going to have openings this year.

*crosses all crossable extremities* Here's looking at you, kid!

Thanks! I'll need all the good wishes I can get.
