And Thus It Begins

I finished my thesis proposal, and I dropped it off along with the registration form at the graduate office. It's really happening! I'm really doing a master's thesis! It's exciting, and a little scary. But mostly exciting.

Congratulations! Hope you love the subject well enough not to end up hating it... :-)That's a big step for a Pony indeed! :-)

I do love my subject, though I suspect that, some time around late March, I'll be ready to have the whole thing done and over with. But right now, the field is wide open.

(And don't mind Doronrîn. . . she's just bragging.)

I'm writing on music as a carrier of Holocaust memory. Fun fun fun till Daddy takes the T-bird away.

That is exciting. Your professor is lucky to have you to work with.

Your professor is lucky to have you to work with.

Let's hope she thinks so, too. The I.N.P.O.D. is my thesis advisor, so this will be a very thoroughly nit-picked piece of scholarship come the end of the year.

That's great! I love how excited you are about your work. Do you already know who your supervisor is or how does it work? Anyone should be grateful for a student with as much enthusiasm as you have.

My thesis advisor is the dreaded Insanely Nit-pickety Professor Of Doom, of Ethnobibliography fame. 'Round here, by the time you've got your idea for a thesis, you have an idea of who you want to do it with. . . or who wants you to do it with them. The I.N.P.O.D. kind of swooped me up and I was her thesis advisee. So I've been consulting with her already about this thesis, and she's helped me refine the proposal and signed off on the registration.

Excellent. You'll be fine - you have a pretty clear idea of what you want to do.

(The Secondborn is chewing his nails down to the quick about the prospect of a masters - wondering if he will cope / manage the financial side / find it helps him get into what he wants and so on. Or should he earn some cash, take a gap year and travel the world. What it is to have the option.)

I'm looking forward to this. I'll get to stretch my scholarly muscles.

What's the Secondborn interested in?

OOH! Congratulations.

You'll do sooo wonderfully, because I know you love your subjects, and you're just brilliant with them.

All these years of study and commitment to music and history and all are coming together, and you are going to really shine.

HUGS.

I am really looking forward to doing this thesis. I've got a topic I can sink my teeth into, and everyone I've talked to about it seems interested. A lot of people even started pointing me to reference sources and other people as soon as I told them my topic, so I'm pretty sure I'll do famously at the whole people-researching thing.

Eeek! Remind me of that when it's the middle of February, and it's gray and wet and cold and I'm mired in thesis writing that seems to have no end.

But, yes, it's early September, and it's sunny, and I'm excited about it. The great adventure indeed.

Here I am late again--let me add my congratulations, FP. I bet your thesis director will enjoy reading your work! Have as much fun with it as you can.

The I.N.P.O.D. has already sent me four e-mailed links to Further Information, including a review of a book I already have checked out of the library.

Amusingly enough, much of the work she sent me was done by the guy I want to do my doctoral work with. He came to speak to our seminar yesterday, so I had the rare opportunity to do some academic fangirling.

Woo hoo, Pony! What a leap forward. And while the I.N.P.O.D. will probably have you tearing your hair out, it sounds as if she's truly interested. Very good.

From what I've heard from the Ethno-babes, the I.N.P.O.D. is a tough advisor, but will bring the best thesis possible out of the advisee. I'm psyched.
