Having Now Unearthed My Headphones . . .

I have seen and heard the trailer for The Hobbit II: Electric Boogaloo. Unbelievably portentous, but, hey, it's a trailer. (And it's Peej trying desperately to make The Hobbit look like an actual sequel to LOTR, which it totally isn't.)

But now, having heard it, one of the great questions of LOTR has finally been answered. Having heard Thranduil's opening voiceover, it is now bleedingly clear where Movie!Legolas got his Captain Obvious tendencies from.

I could see a couple of really good opportunities for comedy scattered through the trailer. If Peej follows up on those opportunities, I think it'll do the movie a world of good. And Thranduil looks pretty good so far. Even if you can totally tell that he sired Legolas "A diversion!" Thranduilion . . .

LOL! I truly want to love this movie, so I am trying very hard to be optimistic. So, I'll go with Juno and say: I adore Thranduil (we all know that's true) and I'm trying very hard to adore this Thranduil. Haven't seen enough to pass final judgment yet.

But I do think it's interesting that the trailer says Thranduil already knows what Thorin is doing. What's the point of imprisoning him then?

Here's what I'd do with a three-hour run time for the second half of The Hobbit. I don't know if Peej will do this, but here's what I'd do. I'd spend a good amount of time establishing just how dark and dangerous Mirkwood really is. And then (having previously established the Dwarves and Bilbo as the lovable characters they really are), I'd show the three disrupted Elf gatherings from the Elves' point of view. I'd really show the danger of having a party outside in Mirkwood at night, and the panic and terror as Something Unknown blunders toward it, and the mad dash to vanish as quickly as possible (because everyone knows that there's safety as well as danger in the darkness).

And then I'd show just how pissed off Thranduil is once he figures out that the mysterious disruption isn't anything evil at all, but just a bunch of homeless Dwarves whom he doesn't even like anyway.

That's how I'd do it, at least.

Just where is the "like" button when you need it? Because this is so, so true.
