Ask A Philosophical Question

And another one shall be answered! Yesterday, I reported on my discovery that chickens do, in fact, cross the road to get to the other side. Today's question: If a tree falls in the forest, is sliced up into LP-sized discs, placed on a specially modified turntable, and analyzed with a computer that turns the data from its growth rings into piano notes, does it make a sound?

Yes!

Check out the result here.

Apparently, the sound that such a tree makes is kind of 1980s Steve-Reich-minimalist. Who knew?

It reminds me of a record I heard many years ago called "Music of the Spheres." Someone had taken mathematical data from the orbits of the planets and transformed that into musical notation. It's kind of fun to hear "what the universe sounds like!"
