And So It Begins

Apartment update: The plan is less to "move in" than to "colonize gradually." The idea is that this will take more time but cause less stress and potentially use fewer boxes, as some can be emptied out and then re-used immediately. Still, a certain amount of packing does have to happen, and my apartment is starting to get that familiar "a tornado passed through here" look.

On the bright side, I was sorting through some stuff in the closet, and I discovered a whole cache of sheet music that I'd feared was lost to the ages. Huzzah!

Also, how ironic is it that, when scheduling an appointment to be re-certified in German for a fellowship application, I have to be mindful not to double-book with the days when I'm tutoring someone in German?

LOL. The cosmos is having a laugh at your expense, FP.

The cosmos and the German government. This fellowship ultimately has to be run through the German government, and they do love their bureaucracy. Even though they list the German-language certification as "optional," my advisor advises me that this actually means "not optional."

Fortunately, I've done this certification before, with the same professor. I'm fairly sure she'll say the same thing this year as she did back in 2010.

Colonizing gradually sounds like a good plan.

I remember when you moved into your current apartment. I can't believe it's been seven years. Holy cow. It's been a great place so I'm sorry you have to leave. But it's time for you to move on to bigger and better things. I'm glad you found a "good enough" short-term place.

I've had a couple of friends who have moved by colonizing gradually, and it seems to have worked out pretty well for them. I have another friend who is in the process of gradually colonizing a new place, and we'll be trading moving help as we go along.

I really don't want to leave the current apartment, but I guess I have to. It's not only University housing, it's really desirable University Housing, and I'm sure they have someone all set to move in as soon as I'm out. Oh, well. It's been a lovely seven years in that place, but maybe it'll turn into a lovely time in a completely new place soon enough. And, for now, the "good enough" apartment beckons. I do like the new place, and it'll be fun to change things up a bit. And it does have some features that my current apartment lacks, like ceiling fans and an actual grownup method of letting guests into the building.

It's amazing the things that can be lost and found during a move.

I took two weeks to move stuff over to my house. Then I moved in and just tidied as I went.

I was so thrilled to see some of that sheet music again, let me tell you! Not just for the music itself, although that was a great find, but also for the memories of my old voice teacher.

Everyone I've talked to about colonizing rather than all-in-one-day moving has been pretty positive about the experience. I think it's going to work out well.
