Just Checking In

Hi everyone! I know I haven't been around much recently, but I did log in today, and I figured I'd say hi and I'm not dead.

Ever since ol' iGor died this spring, I've been using a loaner laptop from a friend. Since it's just a loaner, I haven't done much to customize it, and it doesn't quite feel like "me," although it functions just fine. But since it doesn't feel like "me," playing LJ on it also doesn't quite feel like "me," and I haven't, really.

This being the Summer of World Capitals, I did quite a bit of traveling, managing to see Washington DC (which, believe it or not, I'd never seen), Beijing, and Paris all in the same season. It was a whirlwind, but lots and lots of fun, and once I'm more settled, I'll tell you all about it. As soon as I got back from Paris, I started packing up my Chicago apartment and selling my furniture. I'll tell you, you know shit's getting real when your furniture starts to walk out the door!

Cambridge is working with the UK Border Agency to get my visa paperwork going, so I should be able to get that taken care of before I leave Chicago. The plan is to fly out on September 1st and go to Connecticut to stay with the Pony Parents for a bit. I can have my birthday with friends and family on the East Coast, and stay and be pampered a bit and visit with my grandmother before I make the Big Move.

They think that my visa licence will be for October 1st, and from what I can gather off the UK Visa website, I could enter the country up to two weeks prior to that date. My apartment in Cambridge will be ready for me on the 1st as well, and they've reserved a guestroom at the college for the last week of September. So it looks like the endgame will probably be that I'll fly out to England some time during the last week of September, from either Boston or New York, and spend a few days living in the College guest room until Move-In Day.

Can't promise how much I'll be around till then, but . . . whoa. It's all happening. It's all really happening!

This sounds sooo exciting, from the travel to the move to the future. What a grand adventure.

You know, right after I got the Cambridge job, people started asking me, "So what are you going to do with all of your massive spare time now that you're not on the job market any more?"

Ha. Ha ha ha ha ha.

Prepare a workshop for the cantors' conference. Prepare for ten days in China. Write a paper for a conference in Paris. Make travel arrangements for a conference in Paris. Host singings. Deal with dying computers and grandparents. Oh, and there's the wee little matter of packing up my entire life to move to a different country.

Not much at all. Lots of spare time to laze around. . .
