Just Checking In

Hi everyone! I know I haven't been around much recently, but I did log in today, and I figured I'd say hi and I'm not dead.

Ever since ol' iGor died this spring, I've been using a loaner laptop from a friend. Since it's just a loaner, I haven't done much to customize it, and it doesn't quite feel like "me," although it functions just fine. But since it doesn't feel like "me," playing LJ on it also doesn't quite feel like "me," and I haven't, really.

This being the Summer of World Capitals, I did quite a bit of traveling, managing to see Washington DC (which, believe it or not, I'd never seen), Beijing, and Paris all in the same season. It was a whirlwind, but lots and lots of fun, and once I'm more settled, I'll tell you all about it. As soon as I got back from Paris, I started packing up my Chicago apartment and selling my furniture. I'll tell you, you know shit's getting real when your furniture starts to walk out the door!

Cambridge is working with the UK Border Agency to get my visa paperwork going, so I should be able to get that taken care of before I leave Chicago. The plan is to fly out on September 1st and go to Connecticut to stay with the Pony Parents for a bit. I can have my birthday with friends and family on the East Coast, and stay and be pampered a bit and visit with my grandmother before I make the Big Move.

They think that my visa licence will be for October 1st, and from what I can gather off the UK Visa website, I could enter the country up to two weeks prior to that date. My apartment in Cambridge will be ready for me on the 1st as well, and they've reserved a guestroom at the college for the last week of September. So it looks like the endgame will probably be that I'll fly out to England some time during the last week of September, from either Boston or New York, and spend a few days living in the College guest room until Move-In Day.

Can't promise how much I'll be around till then, but . . . whoa. It's all happening. It's all really happening!

I do have tons of stuff to get done, and a large part of it is packing my life away into liquor boxes. Argh! I just keep telling myself that, less than two months from now, I'll be in Cambridge and all will be calm again, and New Life will begin.

I'll be there for three years, and since it's a research fellowship, the teaching is optional. You get extra pocket money if you do it, though, so I told them I'd take up the teaching option for my second year, just to have the experience of teaching at Cambridge, and also for the pocket money. But I did want to have a year to look around and see how teaching works at Cambridge first!

As far as kitchen stuff goes, I'm selling or giving away things like the basic dishes set, the metric measuring equipment, any small appliances that plug in, and most of the glassware. I'm keeping nice serving dishes, the Chinese bowls that are nothing special except that they are Perfect Bowls, mugs and pint glasses, imperial measuring equipment, and family heirloom stuff. I get a furnished apartment that, I am told by a colleague who spent time in England, will probably contain basic kitchen equipment, and I can always buy more dishes. So, basically, I'm keeping the stuff I really like and getting rid of the stuff that's only generic.
