Keee-razy!

I did it! I threw caution to the winds, and I booked plane tickets to Cork for the Ireland Sacred Harp Convention! Excitement!

On account of a) lack of singings in Cambridge, and b) the expense and c) the lousy timing of the London singings relative to train trips to and from Cambridge, I haven't managed to get to a singing since August, and I've missed it terribly. Well, no more! I am going to Cork, and I am going to sing. Especially since this is a singing that I've been told about since it started, and I could never afford to travel from Chicago. Well, I can afford to travel from Cambridge. It's not exactly the cheapest thing I could do, but in the end, I can afford it, and I'd feel horrible if I didn't go, so I'm going.

Huzzah!

First Sunday in March and the Saturday before, according to the Sacred Harp timekeeping lingo. Which, this year, means February 28 and March 1, a bit earlier than I had thought. Good thing I thought to check the date when I did, or it might have slipped me by!

On sober reflection, in the cold light of morning . . . yeah, I think it is going to be wonderful!

Wow. That's exciting. You're only about an hour's flight from London.

Yup! Half an hour from Cambridge to Stansted, and then I can fly from Stansted direct to Cork. Who knew? Of course, it's Ryanair, but still.

Want to come to the singing? It's the 28th and the 1st of March, and you could check it out for a bit.

What are the times, FP? I work Saturdays and see my parents on Sundays but maybe it's workable.

According to the Facebook page for the convention, it'll start at 10 AM, probably on both mornings, and I'd guess that it'll run till some point mid-afternoon. A 10 AM singing in the States would probably end around 3:30 or 4-ish, but I've never been singing in Cork, so I don't know what their exact time frame is.

According to the minutes, the 2014 convention had two sessions after lunch, which indicates that they ran till about 3 in the afternoon (assuming lunch was over at 1, and each session is about an hour long). Your best bet might be to bring the parents around 11-ish to catch some of the singing and maybe some lunch as well.

It'll be at St. Maries of the Isle School on Bishop Street, in the city. If you want more exact information, let me know and I'll send you the e-mail addresses of the Cork Singer and of the singing chair, who should know these things.

It also struck me that, if you're not too totaled after work, we could meet on Saturday night for drinks or dinner or something in the city, if that's not too inconvenient for you.

Well, I'm still laughing at the suggestion to bring my parents to the singing. That's not going to happen, I'm afraid!

Saturday night might be a better bet. I defo can't let you come and go without meeting up. If only we'd more notice. I'd have arranged something and could have given you a bed.

Ah, their loss!

I'd love it if Saturday night could work! There'll be a social, but I'd much rather hang out with you, and I'm sure there's a pub somewhere in the middle of the city where we could at least grab a quick drink.

I have to go dancing now, but let's talk further about this. Let's do it over e-mail, and we'll figure out how to be in touch once I'm in Cork.

Sorry about the short notice, but I hadn't really known when the Ireland Convention was, just that it was in "early March." It turns out to be "First Sunday in March and the Saturday before," which is earlier than I thought, so I was scrambling a bit myself to get the arrangements made. But the upside is that now I know, so I'll be able to prepare better for next year, and we might be able to arrange a real trip.

Oh this sounds great! I'm glad you did it and I hope you thoroughly enjoy! You should definitely take advantage when you can. You don't know when such opportunities will come around again.

You know, we've had tons of snow recently (at least for our area) and in the 'closings' listings that have been been posted, one of the events canceled on Wednesday was "Lexington Singers." I looked into it a bit and found out they are a group that meets and sings--it sounded a lot like the gatherings you've described in the past. I must say I'm tempted to go. :-) It's been a long time since I've sung. I wonder if I still could.

The more I think about this, the happier I am that I made this choice. It was the right decision, and I'm glad I made it. I'm doing a Jewish choir workshop in London this weekend, and then next weekend is Sacred Harp in Cork. Singing, glorious singing!

There are shape-note singers in your area, but I'm not sure that the group you saw was them. The shape-note group in Lexington meets on Sundays. There's also a community choir called the Lexington Singers. I wonder if it was that group that got canceled.

And yes, you can still sing! Everyone who can talk can sing. Singing is healthy for you, and lots of fun.

Yippee! Have fun! Very exciting!

By the way, we have a new pitcher. Mary has been learning and doing a great job when G. is away.

Off to Ireland tomorrow! Yaaaay!

I'm glad that Mary's stepping up. She'd just started learning how to pitch when I left, and it's amazing how fast you can pick it up when you need to do it!
