The Seven Per Cent Solution

http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/conditions/01/18/cf.saltwater/index.html

Researchers have discovered that inhaling a fine mist of saltwater (7% saline) produces great benefits to cystic fibrosis patients. Apparently it cuts their rate of hospitalization nearly in half by lubricating the mucous membranes inside the lung. Imagine, something as simple as saltwater!

For those who don't know, my littlest cousin has CF, so whenever a new treatment comes up in the news, I get ecstatic.

It's amazing when something simple like that is discovered to help with something for which medical science struggles to find a good approach.

And it's cheap and readily available, too! It's seawater, possibly the most abundant resource on the planet.

The article did mention that the researchers were afraid that drug companies would have no interest in marketing something so simple, since they couldn't really overcharge for it. But, hey, lots of companies market saline solutions for contact lenses.

Osmosis is a very cool thing . Nothing like going back to basic cell mechanics for an answer to a severe problem.

My friend in high school died of CF at 17. Her sister just died at age 38.. and she had a 9 year old son and lived a mostly normal life. The advances against this disease are amazing.

38 is a good-sized life span for CF these days. If my cousin reaches 38, surely there will be even better advances by then (possibly using another commonly found resource such as corn or grass or beer) that will help him live another 38 years.

possibly using another commonly found resource Yes, and easily availabe so one can come with the solution home made and cut hospitalization rate and, above all, feel better. That´s truly good news. Why these things do not make it to the front pages, I wonder? ;-)

Well, this made it to the front page of cnn.com. . . I guess it's because the vast majority of the world's population does not have CF and therefore doesn't think about it much.

I read that article too. That is really cool. I believe it too because if I go to the beach on a windy day congested, I come home feeling 100% fine after breathing the sea air. I hope this helps your cousin. :-)

That seems to be pretty much how they figured out to take a look at sea water. I guess Isak Dinesen was right. The cure for everything is salt water -- sweat, tears, or the sea.
