Why French Pony?

Dot wants to know. . . I can't imagine why anyone else would, though.

Write a little paragraph about your name, why you chose it, what it means to you, etc.

Back in college, I got my first e-mail account, which was on a VAX. You could change the settings so that messages you sent appeared under any name you wanted. After letting it go with my real name for a while, I decided to liven things up, and I chose French Pony. The name is derived from Laura Ingalls Wilder. In her books, she describes herself (apparently based on Pa's words) as being as round and as strong as a little French horse. I liked the description because of the way she used it to express very different feelings about herself as she grew up. It also pretty much described me. "Little French Horse" is an awkward name, so it became French Pony.

After a while, I started using a different name, and I kept that one for a couple of years. But then I reverted to French Pony, because it's easier to spell and remember than the other one was.

What would you change your name to, if you were changing it?

I like French Pony, and I don't see any real need to change it. If I did. . . I don't know. Perhaps Ethnobabe. But it just doesn't have the same potential.

What is your favorite username? Why?

French Pony. There are lots of possibilities for address, variation, nicknames, that sort of thing.

Now, tag five other unfortunates whose usernames you would like to hear about.

We have a saying 'round here. . . three strikes and you're out.

I like French Pony - and it's a good origin. I prefer FP to Ethnobabe! But I suppose reinvention is good at times.

Not that I'd ever actually change it to Ethnobabe. I like French Pony, and all its variants, too much. Plus, it allows me to refer to my family -- Mom Pony, Dad Pony, Little Sister Pony, the various Aunts and Uncles and Cousins Pony. I like that, too.

That's a great story, and I'm glad to know there's a real, live reason behind the choice too (which is nice).

I've always wondered "why French Pony?" too btw. *Blushes*

As opposed to a cold, dead reason?

When I used French Pony on the Vax, Dad Pony occasionally used to address e-mails to "the Gallic nag." That was fun.

Why, yes. :-P

My email addy was randomly generated by Geocities back in the day, so it means nothing to me. I wish I could say "I chose Tealhorse## because...."

On the other hand, "Tealhorse" by itself is a great name.

I am very much a girl Pony. Though I think it's interesting that, in such female-dominated circles as we both run in, you had some doubts.

A lot of people seem to be Mozart addicts. I have to confess that I'm not one of them. I think Peter Schaffer's play and the movie made of it are brilliant, but Mozart's actual music. . . most of it strikes me as the classical version of easy listening. I have an upper limit of about forty minutes before it really starts to annoy me.

On the other hand, I could listen to Bach for hours and not get tired of it.

I knew when you listed Laura Ingalls Wilder in your interests that French Pony likely came from 'strong as a little French horse' - which made me wonder how many french horses they had in Wisconsin/Minnesota/the Dakotas anyway.

I like FP..easy to abbreviate and easy to refer to your family members.

"Strong as a French horse" is an expression that's been around for a while, especially in New England. Pa was born in Cuba, New York, so he might have heard it there.

Jay started it, you know!

You have a great name. And you’re one of the few people with a really good story behind it! The best thing is the opportunity it gives you to talk about your family. I love Pony Family stories!

Let us know how tomorrow goes :-)

Jay started it, you know!

Yes, but she didn't tag me. You did.

I'm glad you like Pony family stories. We're all getting together for Passover this weekend, so there might be a few more in the offing.

I'm not too worried about tomorrow. All indications are that this should be a smooth, easy process. No more than 90 minutes is the official guesstimate.
