In all fairness to Canada, their healthcare system does have some big problems (mainly of the financial sort). On the other hand, when I was sick with minor illnesses I never had a problem getting in to see a doctor (which was free) or getting a prescription filled (which was never unaffordable, even to a student). Everyone is entitled to basic health care. The problems come in when someone has a major illness. Too few specialists in some fields (there is a big braindrain to the south) have created very long waiting lists for some procedures.

It's the bit about how "everyone is entitled to basic health care" that does it. If you get basic health care, you're much less likely to have a small problem morph into a bigger one that requires a braindrained specialist.
