Brief Conference Report

We just got finished with our grad student music conference. There's a concert tonight, and then it's all over. My paper was a hit. But the big revelation of the conference was this:

There is only one thing funnier than watching a grad student try to give a paper exploring the narrative function of music in Deep Throat, and that is hearing this paper immediately upon the heels of a serious paper exploring women's agency and historical voice in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites.

Me, too. I was kind of surprised at how many of the historical musicologists and theorists liked it. Sometimes, the historical musicologists and theorists will just sit and tune out the ethnomusicology papers, because they figure they won't know or care anything about the society under discussion. But I was talking about 19th-century Viennese Jews, and they all know something about 19th-century Vienna, so that grabbed them.

That sounds like it'd do it. (Also, awesome. On both counts.)
