Yet Another Quarter Has Begun

In true University of Chicago fashion, the first day of the spring quarter was completely and utterly gorgeous, and my first class was in the Reg seminar room, which has no windows and fluorescent lights. But I did take a nice leisurely walk to the public library and then to school, so I did get to enjoy some of the lovely day.

I had Ethnographic Methods today, and it looks like it'll be exactly the class I want it to be. It's with advisor-to-be, freshly back from a lecture tour in Merrie Olde Englande. He has given us our most difficult assignment yet: We have to write two papers that are each about four pages long. The horror! How can one write only four pages?

In other news, I read an entire book, cover to cover, in Hebrew! Admittedly, the book in question was Laila tov, Yareach!, which is Goodnight Moon, but it's a start. Next, I will start on a story about a lion who liked to eat strawberries, because my Hebrew teacher recommended that one.

While working on my paper about Christian music in Java, I had a friendly e-mail chat with a music professor from the University of York who wrote a mass for chorus and gamelan, called Missa Gongso, and he said he'd send me a CD of the mass. The package arrived today, with "Royal Mail" stickers all over it. Unfortunately, the Chicago mail had actually managed to snap the CD straight through, from inner ring to the edge, so it's completely unplayable. Does anyone know if this can be fixed?

Catching up...I'm glad your new classes for this quarter look good and cool that you read a whole book in Hebrew! And I had to laugh at the CD. So typical. I have never heard of a way to get data off a disk damaged that way. Sorry. What a pain.

This (icon) is pretty much how I feel about the CD situation. But he said he'd send a new one in a real case, so eventually I'll get to hear this mass.

I've started figuring out how to make icons, which is kind of fun. I can use the Photoshop on the school computers.

And I'm halfway through another book in Hebrew, about a lion who liked to eat strawberries. The plot is at its thickest right now. . .
