April Fools From St. Jo's

Normally, at this time on a Sunday, I'd be happily dancing the evening away at Scottish class on the north side. Unfortunately, the church that hosts us, St. Jo's, played a little April Fools prank on the Scottish Country Dancers. They changed the locks and didn't tell us. Ooops! So, back at home again. On the bright side, I did get to use the el ride to snork down large chunks of Anthropology as Cultural Critique, so the trip wasn't a total loss.

Ooh. I like that book. Lots of provocative idea. Mostly men though. There's another book called "Women Writing Culture" that was done sort of as an answer.

I'd say you Scottish Country Dancers just got a hint!

I foresee an animated discussion in Ethnographic Methods class tomorrow. We're setting that book against Tales From the Field and Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes, and then two of us are doing individual presentations on recording collections. I'm doing the Berlin Phonogrammarchiv's 100th anniversary collection.

Does Women Writing Culture talk about Jane Belo any? I read some of her essays on Balinese culture last quarter, and I thought they were fascinating, especially the one about twins.

I'd say you Scottish Country Dancers just got a hint!

But we're so decent and polite, and we even sweep the floor. . . what's not to love?

I don't remember if Belo is discussed and my stuff is in Ames, of course. I use all those books sometimes when I teach methods.

Frankly, I'm just thrilled to be taking a methods class, finally. After doing three and a half ethnographies for the ol' M.A., I figure it's high time to learn how to do it right before I get started on Le Dissertation.

I'm not sure if I did make the "what I'm taking" post. In any event: Ethnographic Methods, 20th-Century Music Survey, and Hebrew.

That is surely why I missed it...Those sound very interesting.

I meant "read" :-)
