In case anyone was still wondering, my Hebrew teacher finally finished grading my translation test. I passed! Yippee!

I've passed German, Spanish, and Hebrew, so all my translation tests are done. I got credit for a year in the gamelan, and I passed piano sight-reading, so two of my musicianship exams are done. Next year, I will go for sight-singing and transcription.

I seldom have any idea what you're talking about, but this all sounds like good news.. so congratulations!

It's just part of the bureaucratic hoops that I have to jump through in order to achieve candidacy. In addition to a certain number and variety of classes, I have to pass three translation tests, one in German, one in a "research language," of which there is a listed selection that includes French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, and a couple of others, and a third in a "field language," which for ethnos, they love it even more if the language doesn't use the Roman alphabet.

I also have to pass four "musicianship exams," which we also call "practicum exams." You have to pass two "easy skills," which can include sight reading on either piano or the instrument of your choice, sight-singing, or dictation, and two "difficult skills," which include transcription, score reading (making a piano reduction of an orchestral score), or realizing a figured bass (this is a very old-fashioned skill that involves basically improvising a particular type of bass line from hints). You can substitute a full year in any school-sponsored performance ensemble for a difficult skill.

This is in addition to passing the five comprehensive exams and the Special Field Exam, which appears to be the Ethno Essays comp on speed.

After all that, you write and defend a dissertation proposal. Then you're ABD, and all you have to do is write your dissertation.

That's all really impressive. By the time you get a doctorate in your field, you definitely know your stuff.

That's exactly what they want. And it's why the University of Chicago degree is worth so much.
