Real Language Scores A Victory

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/06/21/britain.jargonbusters.ap/index.html

The Local Government Association in England has sent out a decree banning the use of modern business-jargon in British local government activities. Synergy, empowerment, coterminosity -- all of these and more are verba non grata.

Lector Language Person is thrilled, I say ye, thrilled!

Leverage. They need to ban "leverage" while they're at it.

Yes, "leverage" really needs to die in a fire.

I'll check back in on Monday with a whole bunch more after I get to the office. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, my brain is not equipped to retain any of the five hundred terabytes of business school gobbledeygook that gets thrown at it on a daily basis.

Clearly, I need to hear some of these five hundred terabytes. When would you be free for lunch next?

Your brain could explode.

Next week, Tuesday is the only day that's bad at the moment. Later in the week, or the week after?

Well, how about Wednesday? And I guess you'd be wanting it to be some place downtown, right? Not Hyde Park?

Downtown would be easier, and easier to 'splain if I'm gone for a while.

Is the South Loop okay, and do you like Thai food?

There's this Thai place on Harrison and Wabash, called Thai Spoon, which is near the Center for Black Music Research, where I have worked on and off. Thai Spoon is kind of a college-student dive, but it's got pretty decent Thai and Japanese food for a moderately-priced place.

That sounds good. Would you be able to make it a little early, say 11:30? I've got a meeting to go to at 2:00 now.

Yeah, I can make 11:30, especially if I take the el. The Taste has the Drive all clogged up, so the #6 bus takes forever and a day.

We'll have to be careful not to mention to Dot and Bodkin that we're having lunch at such an uncivilised hour :-)

LOLOL. Wait until tomorrow - I'll have about fifty more of my favorite nonsense phrases. FP has no idea what a Pandora's Box she's opened.

The power word I could live 1000 years without ever hearing again and it would STILL BE TOO SOON!!! is 'leverage.' As in, "Let's leverage some of X's talent to stimulate growth in X area." My Cisco boss uses leverage all the time. I counted--in one 2 hour call he used that word 200 times. Despicable.

Even the phrase "power word" needs to be taken out and shot.
