What A Find!

A previously unknown Mozart autograph has just been unearthed at a museum in France! It's just a melody, no harmony or orchestration, but it appears to be an authentic unknown Mozart!

My Wolfie icon is very happy about this.

Of course, I can totally see the U of C music professors deciding to traumatize the composition students by making them try to orchestrate this melody, but the awesome value remains.

Wow. I wonder if they will discover it's a forgery. Man, I'm so cynical, but I read this book a while back about a guy who was a professional forger. It was a fascinating book. He did paintings, but anything can be forged in this day and age. I'll have to check out the story!

Apparently it wasn't so much "lost" as "misfiled." The museum has had it since the 19th century, but the old catalogue seems to have disappeared, and the manuscript was at the bottom of a box somewhere. It also has a certificate of authenticity dating to the 1830s. I think the odds are pretty good here.

It's not something that happens often, but just often enough that it's exciting. Kind of like eclipses of the sun.
