Ricardo Montalban has died. One hopes that the afterlife features seats of Fine Corinthian Leather.

It's actually rich Corinthian leather, but you're closer to the mark than the obit that said "soft Corinithian leather." And you get points for referencing "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan."

This one hopes the afterlife works something like Fantasy Island.

I mostly knew Ricardo Montalban as Khan Noonian Singh, so he was always a Star Trek actor to me.

Let me tell you something mildly embarrassing/funny. When I was about thirteen years old, I went to this Star Trek convention (costume and everything; Mom Pony had made me one of those 1960s minidresses), and one of the events was a vocal imitation contest. Some whim seized me, and while Dad Pony (who had brought me and was very kindly chaperoning me) was off visiting the men's, I inserted myself into the line. Dad Pony returned from the restroom just as I was bringing the house down improvising Khan Noonian Singh expressing his admiration for the captain's chair of the Enterprise, which of course was made of fine/rich Corinthian leather! I came in second to a guy who did Jack Nicholson's Joker in the 1989 Batman, but Dad Pony, to this day, claims that that was just because the Joker guy was louder. He said I had the audience rolling in the aisles doing Ricardo Montalban.

Just improvising on a whim, of course.

I wish I could have seen it! At our local conventions we had a guy who wore a Khan Noonian Singh costume for a couple, three years. It started looking a little seedy, so he converted it into Khan Cindy Lauper Sings or something like that. So you need feel NO embarassment over your no doubt clever impression. I've seen strange things at cons.

I, however, am chagrined to say that I just watched a YouTube video of an old Cordova commercial and Mr. Montalban did, indeed, say soft Corinthian leather in that one. I don't recall it, though, and I think it was an early version. Maybe they even used "fine" somewhere along the way, but I swear the ones I remember said "rich."

Dad Pony sometimes still brings it up as one of the more amazing things he's seen me do. I suspect that I was probably a fairly entertaining kid to raise.
