Because Life Just Is That Way Sometimes

Somehow, the theme of "Baby Jesus in baked goods" has been cropping up in my life a lot recently. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's the weather.

Hurmmmm. It's c-c-c-cold here. I can only imagine what it's like in Chicago.

Baby Jesus is indeed a choking hazard. But don't worry. He's still sitting on the rice jar, and as long as he's there, he's not in any baked goods.

Except possibly cream scones with maple sugar topping.

You've been seeing Jesus in the stuff you bake? Maybe you need to take a vacation. ;-)

I haven't been seeing Jesus. But I did get a Baby Jesus out of a king cake last month, and he's been sitting on my rice jar ever since. (Does it make me really weird that I have a friend who jokes with me about how I'm saving him up for Passover?) And then I had someone over on Wednesday who was eating a cream scone with maple sugar on top that I had made, and said, "I don't know how this works for the Hebrew, but there is Jesus in this scone!"

And my first reaction was, "No, Jesus is on the rice jar, not in the scone!"

I wonder where and when it got to be Baby Jesus. It used to be just a bean. I'm assuming you're talking about king cake for Twelfth Night or thereabouts. I know they put teensy (but larger than a bean) rubber baby figurines in the Mardi Gras King Cakes, but I never heard that it was supposed to be Baby Jesus.

Beats me. I think it was a Twelfth Night king cake; it was back at the beginning of January, and this one lady brought a box of cake pieces to the gamelan and offered them around, saying to be careful eating them because at least one had a Choking Hazard Baby Jesus in it. Lo and behold, Guess Who came up with it?
